The Beatles in Portland

Ask anyone what the names John, Paul, George and Ringo mean, and you may get a 1) a blank stare, 2) a blank stare followed by a smile, or 3) a loud scream and yell. In case you didn’t know, those are the names of the members of the greatest rock-n-roll band of all time, The Beatles. There are many, many fan sites dedicated to them and their music. But I have come across one that not only captures the spirit of the group, but the mania they created. Today’s Family First Site shows just what a fan can do to bring back memories.

The name of the site is The Beatles In Portland. The Beatles toured the US several times in their short career, going to many cities. Portland was not a main stop on a lot of tours, usually it was just a city that groups went by going between Seattle and San Francisco. But for one day in 1965, it was the center of the musical universe when the Fab Four played two shows at the Memorial Coliseum. It is a very unique look at John, Paul, George, and Ringo, one that has never been done in this way before.
This site was created by Chuck Sternberg, who was years old at the time but that didn’t stop him from being attracted them. Now, forty years later, he has captured those moments when Beatlemania ran rampant in Oregon. He has put together a two-DVD set about their time in Portland. They didn’t spend the night, they were only in town for about 10 hours. But what a 10 hours. Chuck interviews 30 people who tell all about the events. There are stories about when their plane landed at the airport, one of the engines was on fire, and how Beach Boys Mike Love and Carl Wilson flew into Portland just to meet them, and to see the show. Also little known is that this show was the last one they gave before they met the King of Rock-n-Roll, Elvis, a couple of days later in southern California.
What sets this project aside is the nostalgia that it creates. Yes, the Beatles gave lots of concerts and visited many cities all over the world. But this is a glimpse at the magic of Beatlemania in a small town that usually was bypassed by major groups (The Rolling Stones let thirty years pass before they made a second visit). If you are a Beatles fan, this will be a gold mine of trivia and nostalgia the is priceless. It shows just how much the Beatles meant to us all, and how much we really miss them.
